These came to mind before i checked, but i completely forgot about Star Rogue which i played about a year ago for the first time and was only able to beat the game with two characters on medium difficulty and using the keyboard. Now i found out you can play with controller also (XBOX 360 Controller works out of the box) and that makes a big difference and a new experience of the game as the controls are very tight and very important. Just like in Super Meatboy: when you die it's completely your fault. Taking damage was always a bad decision on my part and i could never blame the controls or unfair enemies or a bad room layout or something like that.I also like how you get to decide which of two items you choose after clearing a room. This way you can adapt your item stack to your play style and chosen character which brings some interesting decisions. The quotes of each characters are also a nice idea and add to the atmosphere. The patterns of the enemies are not that hard to predict, but offer a new problem to solve which ones you get in a certain room. What makes the difference for me is that every room can be your last if you don't pay attention. You have to be very careful. There is a bit of backtracking, which is not that bad, since you have a minimap (maybe marks for the boss room and the shop room could be helpful)This is how i like hard games and star rogue (at least for me) is pretty hard, though i only play on the "normal" difficulty setting by now.As you see i am a bit biased as Star Rogue has a lot in common with my favourite games, but if you like games of that kind and don't get frustrated if you get GAME OVER a lot in 15 minutes playtime, check it out.I am happy i rediscovered this little gem and i am curious which updates it will get (as it is still on Early Access)[1] https:\/\/www.mikematei.com\/blog\/theres-nothing-wrong-short-games-mike-matei-blog\/. This is quite an interesting game... it reminds me of Jump'n'Run games like Contra and Metroid but also have the feeling of Roguelikes like Binding of Isaac. Maybe it's best compared to Risk of Rain, though it's also quite different in some way :)The gameplay is fun and challenging, though it can be frustrating from time to time dying the same time over and over again. Some enemies are funny, some other are really annoying to play against. I hope there will be more different rooms in the final version! I'm excited to see what's coming next for the game!. Star Rogue has come a long way with the latest update. The controller scheme is more responsive but I'm still don't know how to activate special abilities (and one run I accidently went back to the start screen by pressing the back button!) Each character now has a set weapon and attitude fleshing them out a little and this has challenged me to get a little further into the game which I am now enjoying much more. If a Sci-Fi\/Side Scrolling\/Platform\/Roguelike sounds appealing to you, then give this game a shot.
